Being Sustainable

Sazani Beach embraces sustainable practices, ensuring a eco-tourism ethos; allowing coexistence with local communities without adding to the strain of their resources. Being responsible and contributing to a sustainable blue economy in Zanzibar is important to Sazani Beach, we do this by focusing on three areas we can make a positive difference: 1. Water Usage; 2. Power ; and 3. Sourcing and supporting Locally 4. Waste Management

Water

For 3 decades our water is delivered using the same local family, as reliable as their services are they are only human. We ask to be mindful of leaving taps running when not in use, to help with our water management.

Water works on a quasi-electric and gravity pressure system, ensuring water in times of low/no electricity.

Fresh water is becoming scarce on the island so we DO NOT have a pool. Instead we have the ocean and an award winning beach, lagoon and sandbanks on our doorstep.

Power

All our power is renewable, so we DO NOT have AC, TV or fridges in rooms. Instead we have fans, a prevailing sea breeze, & strong WIFI. When not connected to the grid we have solar as a back up.

Using Local

Where we can we use locally sourced materials and ingredients, from our construction to soaps to the fruit and fish we eat.

Our food is sourced locally and responsibly, with our meals combining Zanzibar spice island cuisine and inspiration, from our family’s travels.

Constructed and furnished using local materials and methods as much as possible, and curated with tidal treasures and personal touches , adding to it’s rustic charm.

Our toiletries are natural, artisanal and sourced locally, by a neighbouring woman’s cooperative.

Waste Management

We limit use of plastic to the absolute minimum, our water is filtered and available by bottle refills or, served in glass bottles, those with refillable bottles, bring them!.

  • We don’t sell bottles of water in plastic, instead we sell by the glass or do bottle refills.

  • We are trying to refrain from using plastic when possible.

  • We recycle water drums as bins, in order to store and repurpose responsibly.
