Sazani Beach Lodge
Nungwi, Zanzibar
Sazani: a home, not a hotel.
Taken from the area’s locality the old Swahili term “left over” with its rocky terrain, no good for farming, the long tides tricky for fishing, and facing Eastwards we have a drier/windier climate than the western coasts. locally seen as undesirable. We saw a home by the sea. Welcome to where wanderers’ wonder.
Designed to be our family beach house, we built in the 1990’s, and opened her doors for travellers in 1996. A heritage of 3 generations, providing a warm welcome escape, with its elevated views, sense of calm, natural surroundings, and homeliness.
Sazani Beach has a strong sustainability ethos, embracing eco-tourism practices, ensuring we coexist with local communities without adding to the strain of their resources. Water works on a quasi-electric and gravity pressure system, ensuring water in times of low/no electricity. All our power is renewable, so we DO NOT have AC, TV or fridges in rooms. Instead we have fans, a prevailing sea breeze, & strong WIFI.
Constructed and furnished using local materials and methods as much as possible, and curated with tidal treasures and personal touches , adding to it’s rustic charm.
We limit use of plastic to the absolute minimum, our water is filtered and available by bottle refills or, served in glass bottles, those with refillable bottles, bring them!.
Our soap bars are natural, artisanal and sourced locally, by a neighbouring woman’s cooperative.
Our food is sourced locally and responsibly, with our meals combining Zanzibar spice island cuisine and inspiration, from our family’s travels.
Fresh water is becoming scarce on the island so we DO NOT have a pool. Instead we have the ocean and an award winning beach, lagoon and sandbanks on our doorstep.
While we do have solar power on site, it functions primarily as a backup system.
Zanzibar’s electricity supply experiences load shedding, it’s infrastructural and beyond our control. During these periods, our solar system may not always have the capacity to carry the full load of a lodge in use.
We kindly ask for your patience and understanding when this occurs. If you need assistance during an outage, let us know — we’re always close by.
Rather than seeing it as an inconvenience, many guests choose to treat these moments as an invitation to slow down:
Stargaze — the night sky here is often extraordinary
Read a book or write by lantern light
Take a walk along the beach or lagoon
Go for a swim, depending on tides and conditions
Sit by a beach fire when winds allow
